To save everyone time and help prevent the same questions from popping up everywhere, we’ve compiled a nice list of FAQ’s here. This will be continually updated over time. If you have a question you don’t see here and feel it needs to be added, go ahead and post it on this thread.
When does the Pre-Alpha/Alpha begin?
Pre-Alpha: January 2nd 2017 (testing window TBD)
Alpha: January 25th 2017 (testing window TBD)
What platforms will Islands of Nyne be on?
Initially on PC (Steam), shortly followed by Mac and VR. Xbox One and PS4 will come later in the future. We'll have more details on console development once we're closer to our PC release. Nothing concrete on Linux support right now but it's something we're considering.
So what the hell is Islands of Nyne?
Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale is an online, competitive, first-person shooter inspired by works such as Battle Royale and The Hunger Games. Handpicked by a mysterious alien race and taken to a distant homeworld, 100 players must fight each other to the death in 1 of 3 ever-shrinking arenas. Drop in, find a weapon, and stay alive... for only 1 can emerge victorious. The rest must die!

Islands of Nyne will retail on Steam for $29.99.
The estimated release date for our Steam Early Access version is Q1 2017.

Do any of the items such as rewards or unlockables give you an in-game advantage over other players?
No. All rewards such as armor and skins in Islands of Nyne are purely cosmetic and do not effect gameplay whatsoever. Once you have the game, you’ll have everything you need to compete. No one will have an unlockable item that gives them an advantage over you.
Do armor sets/skins change player hitboxes?
Hitboxes will stay the exact same size regardless of any cosmetic changes. Nothing will make your character easier to hit.
Will there be any crafting or building in the game?
There are no crafting systems in place at the moment and we don’t plan on implementing any in the near future. We want players to focus more on simply trying to stay alive and hunting down other players rather than spend time gathering scraps. We think this type of fast-paced style adds to the competitive atmosphere we’re aiming for.
So there’s no #Pay2Win in this game?
No. We believe that method of monetization is unethical, especially when it comes to buying items that give you an unfair advantage over other players. The only thing that will separate you from the competition in Islands of Nyne is skill. All of the unlockable items featured in-game are cosmetic changes ONLY. You unlock them with keys which you can buy with the credits you earn in-game. However, we are also playing around with the idea of giving players the option of buying keys with real money as well (a la CSGO).
Wow 100 players per match? How long are queue times?
Player to server ratio is something we'll be heavily monitoring to make sure players don't wait too long to start a match. If the server doesn't reach 100 players, it will begin to lower the requirement necessary to start a match. We are planning on keeping wait times no longer than 3-5 minutes.
How about bots?
Bots are something we will be looking at after launch. We want to nail down the multiplayer aspect before we invest resources into AI.
How long is a match?
We’re currently looking at 25-30 minutes a match but we’ll be monitoring match-pace closely during testing so that we hit the sweet spot. The pace is set by a damaging plasma field that is released from the perimeter of the map in stages, funneling players into progressively tighter combat situations.
So what if I die almost immediately after the match starts? Do I have to stick around?
Nope! You can start a new match right away.
Do you have melee weapons in there?
Yep, we have a bunch of melee weapons spanning different time periods. In terms of combat feel, the game Chivalry has a very fun, complex melee system that we plan on emulating to a certain degree.
What kind of shooting mechanics will you have?
The shooting mechanics in Islands of Nyne are comparable to Insurgency, but with a longer time to kill (TTK).
How are you handling cheaters?
We'll be using Gameblocks FairFight server side anti-cheat system. If that's not enough, we will look into EAC as well as other options. We take cheating very seriously and will be doing everything in our power to prevent them from ruining your experience.
Can I spectate my friends?
Yes. It will be different for Ranked and Casual matches but we have a spectating system where you’ll be able to spectate your friends with a time delay as to prevent ghosting and abuse.
Can I host my own modded server?
Yes, eventually. Player driven content is something we'd like to encourage once we've ironed out our core gameplay mechanics.
What makes Islands of Nyne different from say, The Culling?
We are offering a much more competitive, intense, and balanced gameplay experience. The tone, genre, match pace, gun mechanics, and focus on player driven content are just some things that separate Islands of Nyne from similar type games. More specific features that come to mind are Islands of Nyne's 100 player matches, 3 3x5km arenas, competitive ranking system, betting system, and skill-based rewards.
What’s the deal with VR?
We are currently working on a VR version of Islands of Nyne that will be released at a later date and will be compatible with both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. We are doing extensive testing on how to optimize this game for VR and tackling issues such as motion sickness.
